Development of Baitarani River Basin through integrated and futuristic management of resource Initiative by Shristi.

Bhubaneswar, 26/9: With an aim to develop a holistic plan for futuristic integrated management of basin resources to improve local livelihood and compliment national development an innovative river basin management initiative has been launched by Shristi for the Baitarani River Basin. This is a proactive initiative in Orissa which looks at basin as the unit of development and hence to address the problems of natural calamities like drought and flood along with anthropogenic influences like pollution and water logging etc. squarely in the Baitarani Basin. This pioneering effort is going to address the concern of millions of people.

In the month of June, Shristi, an evolving Non- Government Organization undertook this project for sustainable development and poverty alleviation of the people in the Baitarani Basin. This is a very unique project in itself as it talks about the holistic development and addressing the concern of multi-stakeholders including a large community of people residing in the basin across administrative boundaries.

 The project works on 4 thematic areas viz Hydrology, Natural Resources Management, Rights and Governance, Livelihood and micro-enterprises and their cross-thematic overlaps to internalize multiple interests and concerns in the basin. The project will take into account the basin area inside Orissa, covering 42 blocks in 8 districts viz. Kenonjhar,Mayurbhanj,Sundargarh, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Angul, and Kendrapada with an areas of about 13481.82sqkm and a total population of about 3.8 million out of which 27% are ST and 18% are SC.

 The first phase of this initiative will be completed in 9 months with an investment of Rs 40.74 lakh funded by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Mumbai. The project draws peer support from national and local advisory boards, individual experts as well as collaborates with local research institutions, non governmental agencies and government agencies to gain from synergies. This project will promote socially and environmentally responsible basin resources management by enabling informed choices and an enhanced stakeholder voices
