BANSAPAL VISIT

Baitarani River Basin theme members visited Bansapal block of Keonjhar during 19th Sep-25th Sep 2006.During this period they

  • Tried to analyze the developmental processes and actions carried out in Bansapal on the four thematic disciplines
  • Interacted with block & district level line department offices to gather perception & information on basin resource management for analysis and delineation of critical issues
  • Interacted with community & landscapes to understand & document existing resources management and institutions
  • Tried to explore causes, behind the trends in resource use & institution through probing of community perception & self analysis of situation
  • Attempted to comprehend the upper catchment situation w.r.t landscape & livelihoods and tried to link themes and analyze issues from a holistic perspective
  • Initiated a basin dialogue process involving communities in 5 villages (Kadalibadi,Gonasika,Raidiha,Guptaganga & Danla) & 2 GPs ( Gonasika & Suakathi)

Why Bansapal……………..?

  • Bansapal Block contributes to the Baitarini River Basin highest in terms of geographical area in comparison to other 41basin blocks (7.07%)
  • Bansapal total population is 85,845( 14620 –households, 78.30% ST & 4 % SC)
    out of that 68,147 peoples reside in Baitarani Basin
  • Bansapal Block contributing highest area under shifting cultivation (27511.40 Ha)
    In Orissa, the shifting cultivation is practised in 114 Blocks in 17 districts(3307408 Ha) (ORSAC).Out of 4 basin districts under shifting cultivation Keonjhar contributing more (49738.60 Ha) & of 14 basin blocks under shifting cultivation Bansapal block contributing highest
  • Bansapal houses two Primitive Tribal Groups-Juanga & Bhuyans
    Juanga are practicing shifting cultivation (316 households & 1451 population)
  • The river Baitarani originates from Guptaganga hills in Gonasika of Bansapal Block of Keonjhar district in Orissa state of India at an elevation of 900 m above MSL.
  • Ecologically Bansapal is also important
    Soil type is red laterites with high iron content and acidic in reaction, the texture is mostly gravelling and sandy-loam and soil is subjected to heavy soil erosion & lack of fertility. Forest area -376.95Sq Kms, organic farming as a default method of farming.
  • In Bansapal higher density of NGO carried out developmental activities

Baitarani River Basin theme members visited Hadagada and around of Hatadihi block of Keonjhar during 10th Oct-15th Oct 2006.
